Call for Applications: Boosting Course Accessibility Faculty Fellowships

The USM Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation is pleased to announce a call for applications for the 2026-2027 Boosting Course Accessibility Faculty Fellowship program. This initiative will support up to 12 USM faculty members in engaging in digital accessibility-related course redesign to reduce barriers and support access for all students, including students with disabilities. Each selected faculty member will receive a $1,500 stipend and participate in a collaborative professional development program, culminating in a redesigned course for Spring 2027.

2026-2027 Digital Accessibility Communities of Practice Co-Leads Announced

The 51�Թ�� (USM) Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation is pleased to announce the appointment of four Faculty Co-Leads for the 2026-2027 Digital Accessibility Communities of Practice (CoPs). These leaders will spearhead efforts to ensure that teaching and learning across the system's 12 institutions are inclusive, equitable, and compliant with the upcoming Title II standards.

As the USM works toward the April 26, 2027, digital accessibility compliance deadline, these Co-Leads will provide the disciplinary expertise and peer mentorship necessary to transform accessibility from a technical requirement into a pedagogical strength.

Digital Accessibility in STEM Community of Practice

Dr. Sarah Bass, Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), and Dr. Cyndi Wiley, Collegiate Faculty, Teaching & Learning and Associate Professor in Web/Digital Design & Virtual Reality at University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) will co-lead the STEM Community of Practice.

STEM disciplines often face unique hurdles in digital accessibility, from complex mathematical notation to interactive lab simulations. In their roles, these Co-Leads will conduct a landscape analysis of accessibility guidance within STEM fields and lead a cohort of 24+ faculty members in identifying and solving discipline-specific barriers. Their work will ensure that the next generation of Maryland's scientists and engineers learn in an environment designed for all students.

Digital Accessibility in Music & Arts Community of Practice

Dr. Luis Engelke, Professor of Music at Towson University (TU), and Dr. Jessica Grimmer, Co-Director, Center for Archival Futures (café) and Lecturer in the College of Information at University of Maryland (UMCP), will serve as Co-Leads for the Music & Arts Community of Practice.

Recognizing that visual and auditory arts require specialized approaches to digital inclusion, these Co-Leads will foster a collaborative environment for faculty to experiment with new pedagogical approaches. By reviewing guidance from national arts organizations and implementing WCAG 2.1 AA standards in creative contexts, they will help move the needle on how the arts are taught and experienced across the USM.

A Collaborative Path Forward

The work of these Co-Leads will begin with a system-wide Community of Practice launch on Friday, October 2, 2026. Throughout the academic year, they will partner with the Kirwan Center and the USM Digital Accessibility Working Group to co-create faculty surveys, facilitate virtual meetings, and develop practical solutions that can be scaled across the state.

The appointment of these Co-Leads underscores the USM's commitment to collaborative excellence. By drawing on leadership from across the system's institutions, the Kirwan Center fosters a robust professional network that transcends institutional boundaries, ensuring that cutting-edge accessibility practices are not just shared, but deeply integrated into the fabric of academic departments.

The Kirwan Center will begin recruiting faculty participants for both Communities of Practice in August 2026.

USM Faculty Named Generative AI Pedagogy Fellows for 2026-2027

The William E. Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation at the 51�Թ�� (USM) welcomes a cohort of 14 faculty selected as 2026-2027 Generative AI Pedagogy Fellows from across our USM institutions.

The Generative AI Pedagogy Fellows program is led by USM Senior Fellow for Generative AI Dr. Casey Stratton of Salisbury University and Dr. Jennifer Potter, Associate Director of the Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation.

This initiative brings together faculty who are already advancing generative AI pedagogy in their teaching and research practices. As recognized experts in this rapidly evolving field, Fellows will serve as champions for the thoughtful integration of generative AI across the USM. The program aims to equip these faculty leaders with enhanced skills and knowledge to guide their peers through workshops and collaborative initiatives.

Fellows will further develop their expertise in generative AI applications while establishing a cross-institutional community of practice dedicated to collaborative research and innovation in AI pedagogy. Through this network, they will create, test, and disseminate evidence-based approaches that address the unique challenges and opportunities of AI in higher education. By working together on research projects and sharing their findings, Fellows will help establish the USM as a leader in generative AI pedagogy.

As generative AI rapidly transforms higher education, many institutions struggle with fragmented approaches to faculty development and inconsistent access to AI tools. Our cross-institutional fellows program addresses these challenges by creating collaborative communities where faculty share resources, expertise, and advocacy strategies, ultimately enhancing teaching and learning experiences across the entire 51�Թ��.

USM Announces 26-27 Senior Fellows to Drive Academic Innovation

The 51�Թ�� (USM) Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation is pleased to announce the appointment of three Senior Fellows for the 2026-2027 academic year. These faculty leaders will play a pivotal role in advancing the Kirwan Center’s mission to foster excellence in teaching, learning, and scholarship across the system’s 12 institutions.

As higher education continues to evolve, these Senior Fellows will provide the expertise and mentorship necessary to support faculty in navigating emerging technologies, conducting rigorous educational research, and measuring the impact of innovative pedagogical practices.

Senior Fellow in Generative AI Pedagogy

Dr. Casey Stratton, Assistant Professor in Communication at Salisbury University, has been named the Senior Fellow in Generative AI Pedagogy.

As Generative AI continues to transform the landscape of higher education, the Kirwan Center is committed to ensuring USM faculty are leaders in the ethical and effective integration of these tools. In this role, Dr. Stratton will partner with Kirwan Center staff to co-lead a series of workshops throughout the fall semester, guiding a cohort of faculty fellows in exploring innovative AI pedagogies and best practices. Dr. Stratton will then mentor these fellows as they design and develop their own faculty training workshops, which they will deliver across the USM system in the spring. This cascading model of professional development ensures that cutting-edge generative AI practices reach faculty at all 12 institutions, fostering a system-wide culture of innovation and ethical AI integration.

Senior Fellow for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL)

Dr. Karen Chen, Associate Professor in Data Science at UMBC, will serve as the Senior Fellow for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL).

The SoTL fellowship bridges the gap between classroom practice and systematic inquiry. Dr. Chen will lead the 2026-2027 SoTL Fellows cohort, providing expert guidance on refining research questions, selecting methodologies, and navigating the IRB process. Throughout the year, Dr. Chen will mentor faculty through the lifecycle of their research, from initial data collection to the preparation of manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication. This leadership ensures that USM faculty continue to contribute significantly to the global conversation on evidence-based teaching.

Senior Fellow for Assessment & Evaluation

Dr. Luciana Zuest, Professor in Kinesiology at Towson University, has been selected as the Senior Fellow for Assessment & Evaluation.

Understanding the effectiveness of educational initiatives is essential for sustainable innovation. Dr. Zuest will lead the design and implementation of evaluation strategies for various Kirwan Center programs. By collecting and analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data, Dr. Zuest will develop data visualizations and reporting materials that communicate program impact to internal and external stakeholders. This role is vital for ensuring that the Kirwan Center’s initiatives remain data-driven and responsive to the evolving needs of faculty across all USM campuses.

A System-Wide Impact

The appointment of these three distinguished faculty members underscores the USM’s commitment to faculty-led innovation. By partnering with faculty leaders from Salisbury University, UMBC, and Towson University, the Kirwan Center ensures that cutting-edge pedagogical research and practices are shared and implemented across our institutions. This collaborative approach allows us to scale student and faculty success initiatives that meet the unique needs of our campus constituents and benefit the entire state.

Call for Proposals: 2026-27 Elkins SoTL Fellows Program

The Call for Proposals for the 2026-2027 Elkins SoTL Fellows Program is now open!

Up to 10 Elkins SoTL Fellowships of $1,000 each will be awarded for 2026-2027 (May 22, 2026-June 30, 2027). The Elkins SoTL Fellowships are open to USM faculty of any rank or appointment interested in undertaking a research project focused on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. A faculty member should serve as principal investigator (PI) on the project; a staff person may serve as co-PI provided the project originates with the faculty member. At present, we are not considering graduate students for this fellowship but may do so in future cycles.

Join Kirwan Center staff on Monday, April 13, 2026, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm ET for a virtual Information Session to learn more about the Fellowship requirements and expectations. We will also answer questions about the program at that time. Register for the Information Session. 17 Faculty Selected for Boosting Course Accessibility Mini Grant Program

The William E. Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation is pleased to announce that 17 faculty members have been selected to participate in the Boosting Course Accessibility mini grant program. This initiative aims to enhance the digital accessibility of courses across USM institutions and help ensure that all students have equitable access to course materials.

The selected faculty will receive funding and support to redesign their courses with accessibility in mind, including implementing universal design principles that benefit all learners. Participants will work closely with Kirwan Center staff to identify and address barriers in their course materials, learning activities, and assessments.

Through this initiative, we expect to see immediate improvements in course accessibility while building long-term capacity for inclusive design across departments. The selected faculty span the System and represent diverse disciplines, resulting in accessibility course models across science, technology, engineering, and mathematics; social sciences; humanities; business; education; and health professions.

USM and Google Announce Partnership

The 51�Թ�� (USM) and Google announced a new partnership today that will help thousands of USM students and other Maryland learners earn Google Career Certificates in high-growth fields including cybersecurity, data analytics, and project management at no cost. USM will also offer learners Google’s new AI courses, designed and taught by AI experts at Google to teach foundational skills in artificial intelligence technology. All 12 of USM’s public universities and two of its regional higher education centers will offer this training.

The partnership comes at an opportune time for USM in amplifying its role in preparing learners for an AI-focused economy. By offering the Google Career Certificates program, USM is also providing learners access to industry-recognized credentials in high-demand fields, which can help boost learners’ career readiness across many different sectors.

Keeping pace with in-demand skills has become a defining factor in workforce readiness. A recent industry report found that 96% of a global sample of employers reported that micro-credentials strengthened a candidate’s job application, and 9 in 10 said they were willing to offer micro-credential holders a higher starting salary. In the realm of AI, 75% of these employers said they would hire a less experienced candidate with a GenAI credential over someone more experienced without one, illustrating GenAI’s impact on hiring decisions (Micro-Credentials Impact Report, Coursera, 2025).

“We’re excited to partner with Google, one of the most trusted leaders in industry certificates. This collaboration will boost the career readiness of our learners across the System and give them an undeniable competitive edge,” said USM Chancellor Jay A. Perman. “It supports our vision for the future of higher education and the critical role the USM plays in upskilling and reskilling Maryland’s workforce—never more important than right now.”

The USM-Google partnership will have a special emphasis on bringing Google Career Certificates and AI courses to active military, veteran, and military family learners. This unique emphasis recognizes USM’s long-standing commitment to these learner populations, which recently culminated in six USM universities being cited as “Best for Vets” by the Military Times, which looked at student success metrics, availability of military-specific resources, and financial assistance, among other factors, in developing its rankings. Only 300 institutions were recognized nationally.

"Google is thrilled to partner with the 51�Թ�� to bring Google Career Certificates and AI Essentials courses to thousands of learners, active military, and veterans across the state," said Lisa Gevelber, Founder, Grow with Google. “This collaboration is a significant step in equipping Maryland’s current and future workforce with skills needed for an increasingly digital economy.”

Google Career Certificates can be completed within three to six months of part-time study, with no experience required. Designed and taught by Google employees, each certificate includes 100+ practice and graded assessments, quizzes, or writing assignments to ensure rigor and mastery. Students who complete the program gain access to our employer consortium of more than 150 companies – including Booz Allen Hamilton, Siemens, and of course, Google – committed to considering certificate graduates for relevant roles. More than 1 million people globally have graduated from the Google Career Certificate program, and over 70% report positive career outcomes within six months of completion, such as a new job, promotion, or raise.

“This partnership signals the value of blending robust degree programs with recognized industry training and extending opportunities for lifelong learning,” said Delegate Stephanie M. Several schools in the system, including the University of Maryland, College Park and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, also have provided access to Gemini App—Google's generative AI with enhanced security and privacy, included with Workspace for Education at no cost. Students and educators can use Gemini to assist in learning across various subjects.

Kirwan Center Names Two Senior Fellows for Generative AI Pedagogy

The William E. Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation at the 51�Թ�� (USM) welcomes 2025-2026 Senior Fellows focusing on Generative AI pedagogy, Dr. Diane Alonso of University of Maryland, Baltimore County and Dr. Tracy Tomlinson of University of Maryland, College Park.

In their role as Senior Fellows for Generative AI Pedagogy, Dr. Alonso and Dr. Tomlinson will help lead the development of Generative AI programming coming out of the Kirwan Center in academic year 2025-2026. This includes working closely with Kirwan Center Associate Director, Dr. Jennifer Potter, in the development of a “train the trainers” curriculum to engage a selected group of Gen AI Pedagogy Faculty Fellows from across the System. With mentorship and support from the two Senior Fellows, the Gen AI Pedagogy Faculty Fellows will move through the curriculum in Fall 2025 and then engage their respective campus colleagues in professional development in Spring 2026.
